Security vulnerabilities in automatic tank gauges affecting airports, gas stations, and military bases can lead to gas spills and disruption in critical infrastructure services. Automated Tank Gauges (ATGs) are used across various industries, including fuel management for critical infrastructure. Newly discovered vulnerabilities which number 11 flaws across six different systems allow attackers to compromise gas tanks with administrative privilege. The flaws could allow remote attackers to bypass authentication, manipulate fuel levels, or disrupt operations. Attackers could exploit these vulnerabilities to cause major disruptions in industries reliant on fuel storage and transportation, leading to significant operational and security concerns.
What You Can Do
IT administrators should immediately apply the security patches provided by vendors and restrict remote access to these devices. Network segmentation, along with continuous monitoring for suspicious activity in industrial control systems (ICS), can reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities. Regular vulnerability assessments and updating firmware can further strengthen defenses against such critical infrastructure risks.
